In a nutshell, the careers marketing team organises events, tells you about all the amazing things Careers+Placements does to support you along your career journey, and promotes exciting opportunities offered by companies all over the world. We’re made up of several lovely people: two marketing officers, a digital engagement officer, an events co-ordinator, a marketing manager and our very own placement student! Here’s a little taste of what we do – and things to look out for!
Newsletters and emails
You’ll get wonderful newsletters from us in your inbox which are jam-packed with information and resources. Depending on what year you’re in, these will include things like live placement opportunities for your college, upcoming events that are run by employers or the C+P team, tips for smashing the application process for your dream role and much, much more. We send the following newsletters out regularly, so keep your eyes peeled for them: Your Future Starts Now goes out to first years monthly; Your Placement Search goes out to second years fortnightly; Your Placement Journey goes out to students on placement monthly; Your Future goes out to final years weekly and postgraduates monthly.
We also send out ad-hoc emails throughout the year if there’s something in particular we think you might be interested in, such as our annual careers fairs or an upcoming marketing campaign. Sometimes our emails and newsletters end up in the dreaded spam folder though, so make sure to check yours regularly to make sure you don’t miss out on anything!
We plan, organise and deliver a number of campaigns throughout the year. These campaigns tie in with the student journey and align with your career priorities at different points throughout the year. Some of the campaigns we’ve run over the last academic year include: Get Ahead (which encouraged second years and final years to apply for big-name placements and graduate roles before they closed at the end of the year), Outside The Box (which encouraged all students to explore opportunities like volunteering, virtual internships and flexible placements) and Mission Employability (which aimed to prep final years for life after Aston). Even this blog post you’re reading right now is part of our We Don’t Bite marketing campaign, which aims to show the friendly faces behind the C+P team and highlight all the different things we do to help you.
We also manage the Careers+Placements blog (the very one you’re currently on!). Once you’ve read this blog post from top to bottom, make sure to check out the rest of the posts we have on here. We’ve got heaps of content from students, graduates, employers and careers staff that could support you in all sorts of ways. Whether you’re looking for some placement inspiration, want to know what it’s actually like being in a graduate job or want to get advice for your CV/cover letter/application/interview/all of the above, there’s a post for you. So make sure to bookmark this blog while you’re here!
Did you know there’s a dedicated Careers+Placements section over on the Aston University website? Well, you do now! We’re responsible for writing copy and creating content for these pages, making sure all the information on the pages is accurate, relevant and accessible, and editing the pages through the CMS.
These webpages are bursting with useful tools, resources and information which cover all aspects of your career journey. We recently refreshed the design of the pages too, so make sure to check them out: www.aston.ac.uk/careers
From Campus to Careers podcast
We recently launched our very own podcast! This involves a lot of work, from coming up with episode ideas, researching our guests or topics so we’ve got lots of good questions to ask, recording and editing the episodes, publishing them and then finally promoting them! In each episode, we’re joined by a different guest as we discuss topics such as work experience, CV advice, assessment centres, starting up your own business, the placement year and more. We’d absolutely love it if you gave it a listen: https://careersandplacements.buzzsprout.com
If you’ve ever checked the events calendar over on Aston Futures (and we really hope you have), you’ll have noticed that we run a lot of events throughout the academic year. We’re talking careers fairs, skills workshops, placement events, work experience drop-ins, employer-led sessions and so much more. Here in the marketing team, we’re not only responsible for promoting these to ensure you are aware of them – and hopefully booking onto them! – but we also organise some of the events ourselves. To see what’s coming up over the next few weeks, head on over to Aston Futures.
We’re on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn! We post lots of exciting content on these channels such as live roles, competitions, details of upcoming events and more. Over on Instagram, we often run takeovers with students, graduates, employers and C+P staff to give you behind-the-scenes access to what it’s like in the workplace, highlight current opportunities or share advice for job applications. We also share top tips for your career journey every Tuesday! Why not give us a cheeky little follow if you’re haven’t already?
We’re always after student-led content – because who doesn’t like hearing what their peers are up to? We often reach out to students and graduates for quotes, case studies, Instagram takeovers, blog content or to see if they’d like to talk to us on a podcast episode. We absolutely love it when we hear from you folks, so if you’d be happy to share your thoughts with us, please get in touch! You can drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Another way we gather content is through our annual Placement in Focus competition – if you’re currently on placement, listen up! This is a chance for students who are on placement to showcase their experience for the chance to win a fantastic prize. We’re constantly blown away by the fantastic entries we get – and gather lots of travel inspo in the process! We also use the entries throughout the year to encourage the next cohort of second years to apply for placements.
We want to make sure that everything we do is useful and relevant to our target audience (that’s you) so we try to get student feedback where we can. You might have seen some of our polls on Instagram, filled out an online survey about one of our events or attended one of our focus groups in the past – we use all of these methods to gain constructive feedback on our activities, plan future projects and get a sense of what your current priorities are. If you do see any opportunities to feed back to us about anything, please do as it really does help us to deliver the best work we possibly can!
Content created by the Careers+Placements team has its own distinctive branding – at the moment, the colourful triangles and crosses, and cute little hand-drawn illustrations are key parts of the brand. It’s important for us to have a brand as it makes our content instantly recognisable. As the marketing team, it’s our job to design materials that adhere to the branding (e.g. posters, flyers, pull-up banners and digital artwork) and to ensure other C+P staff feel comfortable using the branding.
Whew, as you can see, we’re all very busy bees in the careers marketing team! But all our hard work is worth if it helps you to go out there and achieve your career goals 😊
