The Big Careers Fair will take place on Wednesday 20th October 2021, and today we’re sharing the answers to some of your questions, including how to access it, how to prepare for it, and how to find out which organisations are attending.
When is the fair?
Wednesday 20th October, 10am-4pm
How do I access the fair?
It will be held on the Careers Fair Plus app. You can download the app on the App Store or on Google Play. Alternatively, you can access through your web browser if you’d rather use a laptop or computer.
How do I book a 1-to-1 meeting with an employer?
Once you’re in the app, type ‘Aston University’ in the search bar, and select the fair. You’ll be able to see the list of employers attending the events and see what meeting slots they have available. Please note, meetings will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have booked a meeting and can no longer make it, please cancel it so that another student can have that opportunity.
We’ve made a step-by-step guide to using the app – make sure you check it out!
How do I access the 1-to-1 meetings I’ve booked on the day?
To join your 1-to-1 employer meetings on the day of the fair, you’ll just need to head to the ‘Meetings’ tab on the Careers Fair Plus app. There you’ll be able to view all the meetings you’ve booked. Hit the ‘Join meeting’ button when it’s time for your meeting and the employer will let you in.
How should I prepare for the fairs?
We’re running a couple of events designed to help prepare you for the fair:

The Big Careers Fair: Q&A
Thursday 14th October | 1-2pm | Online – BlackboardThis webinar will take a Q&A (Question and Answer) format to answer your questions, concerns and ideas about virtual careers fairs. Virtual careers fairs are different to physical fairs so use this session to build your confidence and awareness to prepare effectively.
Book your spot.
I’m a first year student. Can I attend?
Absolutely! Come along and explore your options. It’s a great opportunity for you to speak to employers, and find out more about the industries you’d like to work in, and hear about the recruitment process.
What should I wear?
We suggest you dress smartly to help create a positive first impression. If you’re unsure, Google ‘business wear’ or ‘business casual’ for some ideas!
How formal are the meetings?
The meetings aren’t formal. It’s not an interview, it’s just an opportunity for you to have a conversation with them.
Is there a limit to how many meetings you can book?
You can book as many as you like! All we ask is that you only book one appointment per employer, so that other students can have the opportunity to speak to them, too. If you can no longer attend a meeting that you’ve booked, please cancel it so that someone else can have your slot.
Can I just book on the day?
The meetings are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so we do recommend booking in advance. There’s nothing to stop you coming along on the day to see if there are appointments, but we can’t guarantee it. Some employers will also have group meetings available on the day, however these will be group sessions rather than 1-to-1.
Will the employers have opportunities?
Yes! Some will have placement roles, some will have graduate positions, and some will have both. In the app, you can filter the employers according to the type of opportunity you’re looking for.
Can I attend the meeting with a friend?
The 1-to-1 meetings are for individuals. It can be daunting speaking to an employer, but remember that it’s not an interview, it’s an informal conversation. If you’re really not comfortable going on your own, you could attend a group meeting with a friend. If you’re struggling with nerves, have a read of this.
Which employers will be there?
There are lots of employers attending! Here are just a few: Müller UK & Ireland, HSBC, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Virgin Media, Atkins, Aldi, MI5, BAE Systems, Morrisons, Royal Air Force, Severn Trent, BT Group, Network Rail, Unilever, Bupa and more.
You will be able to see the full list of employers in the app.
What do I do if the employer I want to speak to has no meeting slots left?
The meeting slots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Check back to see if any new meeting slots become available. Alternatively, if the employer has a group meeting, you can attend this. Be sure to think of any questions you might have beforehand!
I can’t make it on that day. What can I do?
The app will remain open after the events, so you will still be able to view the employer profiles until then. Once the fairs have passed, there will be no more appointments.
