My tips for getting your dream graduate role

As Christmas fast approaches, so do graduate role application deadlines. Give yourself a stress-free, relaxing break and get your graduate job sorted before exams and deadlines in the New Year.

A large amount of companies (including Unilever, Danone and Bank of America) have application deadlines before Christmas so, to save yourself from missing out, make sure you start applying early. I knew that I wanted to get my graduate role organised before the end of the year, as I knew I would have a dissertation to write and exams to prepare for in 2019.

I found my role at Johnson & Johnson through my placement year, as I was able to apply early whilst I was on my year in industry. If your company has this opportunity, I would recommend getting in touch with the HR department or your old manager to see what is available.

Even if you did not enjoy your placement so much or discovered it was not the area you would like to go into, think about external companies that you worked with during that time which may have entry level roles or graduate schemes on offer. I was able to participate in three work experience opportunities at a media and PR agency, and a magazine due to reaching out to people I had worked with. I am a huge believer in making contacts and networking!

Some top tips that I have for securing your dream role are:

  • Maintain a good LinkedIn profile. I have found many roles through the platform and you can easily apply using the information on your profile. On the jobs section, you can simply type in ‘graduate’ and select UK for a wide search – or you can narrow it down to specific types of roles and locations.
  • Regularly check websites like TARGETjobs as they release roles daily and being one of the first applicants can be a huge advantage.
  • Just because the deadline is in one month’s time, do not leave it until the last minute as the company may end applications early due to already finding suitable candidates.
