How to stay positive during the placement search

The process of applying for placements can often be long and disheartening, particularly when companies don’t respond to your applications, or you’re facing rejections. But, it’s important to not give up hope!

Here are some tips to remember to help keep you going during the search:

  • There are plenty of jobs out there
It’s important to keep your options open, as any experience is good for the future. Even though a lot of big companies have earlier deadlines, lots of SMEs (small-to-medium-sized enterprises) post job adverts throughout the year, so check regularly to see if there is anything new out there which you might enjoy. Aston Futures is a good place to look.
  • Take advantage of the Careers+Placements team
Remember that whilst you are waiting for responses, there is preparation you can do in the meantime. The Careers+Placements team here at Aston offer workshops for assessment centres, as well as psychometric testing practice, which could be part of the next stage of the application process, so it might be a good idea to make a head start whilst you wait. You can also book mock interview sessions to practice before the real thing. The Placement Coordinators are your personal cheerleaders, so speak to them if you’re feeling deflated!
  • Don’t panic, they’re not ignoring you
Many companies have hundreds of applicants for each role and it is common that responses can take weeks or even months. In some situations, it is also expected that companies do not respond at all. Although this can be annoying, do not get too worried or disheartened, they just don’t have the time to reply to every single applicant.
  • Learn from each experience: Each application, even if unsuccessful, is an opportunity to learn and gain experience for future applications and will help build your confidence.

I wish you the best of luck!
