We sometimes get feedback that students aren’t sure how they can use our service. Do we check CVs? Do we do any interview prep? Can we help you decide what to do with your life? The answer is yes, yes, yes. And a whole lot more.
We could give you a list of all the things we could do, but instead, we thought we’d ask some of our students and recent graduates, and let them tell you how they’ve used Careers and Placements. They’ll also hopefully reassure you that we’re really not scary!
Katie, 2020 Graduate
“During my placement search, I met with a member of the Careers and Placements team to help me ensure my CV stood out not only factually but visually as well. Without their help I’d have felt much less confident in submitting my applications and wouldn’t have received the great feedback on my CV that I did. It is the first thing most prospective employers see and so making an impact with a striking and structured CV is key.”
Jordan, 2020 Graduate
“My Careers Consultant made me feel comfortable in sharing what I was concerned about. They always had the right piece of advice or the best resource to get me into a great position, from which I secured my Placement (at IBM).”

“My experience with several Career Consultants and Placement Coordinators has been very positive. I would describe them as approachable and understanding people. I attended workshops during first year where I received useful advice on how to create my CV, which helped me be ready to apply for placement roles at the start of second year. During my placement search, I booked a few appointments with one of the Placement Coordinators, who quickly understood what I was looking for and helped me look for roles and target my cover letters. When the pandemic forced everyone to work from home, I remember that it was quick and easy to access their support via email or over the phone.”

“The placement team helped me to discover opportunities I had not thought of. I am so glad that I reached out!”

“The staff in the Careers and Placements team are very friendly. They provided me with support and advice for applications and assessment centres. I also visited the team to receive feedback for my CV and LinkedIn profile. Any question that I had would always be answered!”

“The Careers and Placements team at Aston University has been nothing short of exceptional in terms of how they have helped from my second year at university. Not only have they helped me with applications for placements in reviewing my CV and cover letter, but they also helped me prepare and secure my work placement. If it were not for their support, I would not have been able to develop my employability competencies, and it is because of this I am grateful for their support. I urge all students to contact them and utilise their support service – whether you are searching for a placement or graduate role.”
Alix Twiggs, 2019 Graduate
“The Careers and Placements team were always so approachable. I really felt as ease talking to them about both my year abroad and then career options in final year!”
Katie, 2020 Graduate
“When beginning to hunt for graduate positions, I had a meeting with a Careers and Placements Careers Consultant to help me structure and write an effective cover letter. The guidance I received on this was vital in curating effective applications since it could be applied to all cover letters I wrote going forward. Having this great structure to follow made applications a much quicker and easier process, whilst still knowing my cover letter would catch employers attention.”

“I would like to thank the Careers and Placements team for their incredible help and support throughout my journey here at Aston. I first found out about Careers and Placements at the beginning of my first term in the first year here at Aston and have met so many lovely and friendly people from the team, they have always guided me throughout. If it wasn’t for Careers and Placement I would have not had many varied roles within the university such as Students Ambassador, Pathway to healthcare mentor, Marketing Assistant, and the list goes on! The team supported me during the second year with psychometric tests, as well as with interview practice, and special thanks to the team, as a result of them, I found the right placement. I will always be thankful for the support and guidance provided by the Careers and Placements team and I highly recommend any student looking for a placement or part-time role to visit them.”
