Degree: MSc Engineering Management

Year of graduation: 2018

Employer: Siemens PLC

Job title: Regional Lead Application Engineer

What does a typical day in your job look like?

Checking on the priorities of customer’s requirements and recommending upgrades on their current installation. I also chair meetings and attend strategic calls.

What has been the highlight of your job so far?

The highlight of the job so far was my BOSIET Training (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training). I previously had a fear of heights, water and being in confined spaces, so this training was challenging and demanding – both physically and mentally. I was able to overcome my fears and complete the certification.

What skills have you developed in your role?

Dealing with people and being patient with them is a skill which I have developed – and am still developing. Every day I am learning how best to work with different people, as everyone has different personalities and working styles. Building strong working relationships with employees can be the most challenging part in any organisation.

How has your current role shaped your career plans?

My current role has helped me to gain experience in new area of engineering and there have been so many learning opportunities for me.

How did you secure your role?

I took time after I graduated to look into different career options and choices, and see what was the best fit for me.

What advice would you offer to final year students or other recent graduates looking for a role?

Take your time when looking at opportunities and seeing what’s right for you. It’s not a competition – every individual has their unique path and journey.
