Career Fairs: Answering your questions

abbyAdvice, Final Year, First Year, Second Year

Our virtual careers fairs are coming up, and today we’re sharing the answers to some of your questions. We hope it’s useful!

When are the fairs?
– STEM Fair: Thursday 22nd October, 10am-4pm
– Business Fair: Tuesday 27th October, 10am-4pm

All the information about the fairs can be found here.

How do I access the fairs?
This year the fairs will be held on the Careers Fair Plus app. You can download the app on the App Store or on Google Play. Alternatively, you can access the fairs through your web browser if you’d rather use a laptop or computer.

How do I book a 1-to-1 meeting with an employer?
Once you’re in the app, type ‘Aston University’ in the search bar, and select the fair you’d like to attend. You’ll be able to see the list of employers attending the events and see what meeting slots they have available. Please note, meetings will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have booked a meeting and can no longer make it, please cancel it so that another student can have that opportunity.

We’ve made a step-by-step guide to using the app – make sure you check it out!

How do I access the 1-to-1 meetings I’ve booked on the day?
To join your 1-to-1 employer meetings on the day of the fairs, you’ll just need to head to the ‘Meetings’ tab on the Careers Fair Plus app. There you’ll be able to view all the meetings you’ve booked. Hit the ‘Join meeting’ button when it’s time for your meeting and the employer will let you in. For more information about accessing your meetings on a laptop, watch this video.

How should I prepare for the fairs?
We’re running a webinar on Monday 19th October at 11am, all about preparing for the careers fairs! We highly recommend you come to that – not only will it help you, but you’ll also be entered into a prize draw to win a £20 Love2Shop voucher! Book your spot here. You can also read this post about how to speak to employers.

I’m a first year student. Can I attend?
Absolutely! Come along and explore your options. It’s a great opportunity for you to speak to employers, and find out more about the industries you’d like to work in, and hear about the recruitment process.

What should I wear?
We suggest you dress smartly to help create a positive first impression. If you’re unsure, Google ‘business wear’ or ‘business casual’ for some ideas!

How formal are the meetings?
The meetings aren’t formal. It’s not an interview, it’s just an opportunity for you to have a conversation with them.

Is there a limit to how many meetings you can book?
You can book as many as you like! All we ask is that you only book one appointment per employer, so that other students can have the opportunity to speak to them, too. If you can no longer attend a meeting that you’ve booked, please cancel it so that someone else can have your slot.

Can I just book on the day?
The meetings are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so we do recommend booking in advance. There’s nothing to stop you coming along on the day to see if there are appointments, but we can’t guarantee it. Some employers will also have drop-in sessions available on the day, however these won’t be 1-to-1.

Will the employers have opportunities?
Yes! Some will have placement roles, some will have graduate positions, and some will have both. In the app, you can filter the employers according to the type of opportunity you’re looking for.

Can I attend the meeting with a friend?
The 1-to-1 meetings are for individuals. It can be daunting speaking to an employer, but remember that it’s not an interview, it’s an informal conversation. If you’re really not comfortable going on your own, you could attend an on-the-day drop-in session with a friend. If you’re struggling with nerves, have a read of this.

Which employers will be there?
There are lots of employers attending! Here’s just a few: M15 The Security Service, EY, GSK, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Severn Trent, Mondelēz, ICAEW, Bakkavor, Virgin Media, NatWest, HM Treasury, Cadent, Softcat and many more. You will be able to see the full list of employers in the app.

What do I do if the employer I want to speak to has no meeting slots left?
The meeting slots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Check back to see if any new meeting slots become available.

I can’t make it on that day. What can I do?
The app will remain open after the events, so you will still be able to view the employer profiles until then. Once the fairs have passed, there will be no more appointments.

I’m feeling nervous about talking to employers. Do you have any advice?
We’ve got lots of useful resources to help prepare you for the fairs. These may be a good starting point for you:

I’m struggling to use the app. Is there anyone I can speak to?
If you’re having any issues with using the app, please email careersmarketing@aston.ac.uk and a member of the team will be able to help.
